3 Things to Consider When Replacing Your Car Exhaust

Posted on

Car exhaust systems are extremely important, and most people don't believe this. How efficient would any system be if it were clogged with dirt and waste? Not that efficient. Faulty exhausts are disasters in the making. It will constantly eat away into the car's health and can ultimately make you and the passengers sick. It will also spew a huge amount of pollution into the air. It is important to take care of your exhaust system for excellent performance. Here are a few factors to consider if you are looking to replace a broken exhaust system.

Size

When buying a new exhaust pipe, you want to take size into consideration first. The newly acquired exhaust should fit in both diameter and length, which is why you need to measure the old one first. If an exhaust pipe is of the wrong diameter, it will not fit in your tailpipe and it will be useless. Tips come in a wide array of sizes and diameters depending on the type of vehicle that you own. For example, SUV or high performance cars will have larger tips in terms of diameter in comparison to smaller cars.

In terms of length, you do not want to choose a short exhaust tip because then the engine gases won't be allowed to vent properly, and this can cause major problems to your vehicle's engine. Don't worry about buying an exhaust pipe that's too long. You can easily cut it down or polish it in order to achieve a smaller size.

Material

When it comes to materials, there are two primary choices that you can go with. If you want a solution that looks good short term and costs slightly less, chrome tips made out of mild steel are the way to go. If you are looking for a more durable solution that won't require any car exhaust repair in the near future, you should choose a tip made out of stainless steel.

Welding or clamping?

The first step to a car exhaust repair is understanding that the tips can be either welded or clamped into place. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages. Welding exhaust tips gives you an extremely tight seal, but that is not very flexible in terms of removal and installation. This means that you will have to pay more the next time you try to change your tips.

With clamping, you have the advantage of customisation. You can easily install and remove the exhaust tip whenever you please. Because of this flexibility, the tip may become loose in time because of vibrations and it can become tiresome to keep tightening them.
